I was pretty shocked to see how much my marriage changed after baby arrived. Does anyone else feel this way? I honestly don’t feel like I was fully prepared for how different our dynamic would become. Before baby, we loved date nights, weekend outings, Netflix binging, and slow cooking with great music. We had a sweet mix of independence and together time.
After baby, our dynamic shifted. Suddenly, we found ourselves pouring into this tiny, sweet soul and honestly found little energy to put toward our own relationship. Spontaneity was tossed out the window and we spent most our time dividing tasks and running independently even though we were physically in the same space. And frankly, this has been tough!
However, making intentional time for each other has given a huge boost of fun and energy to our marriage. Here are some cheap and fun dates that you can do with baby in tow.
- Picnic park date. We love to pack or pick up lunch and head to the park. Sometimes we will go around nap time and have baby fall asleep in the stroller when the weather’s nice. This lets us have some time to chat and focus on each other. Bonus: here’s an incredible picnic blanket that my mom gave me for my birthday. I love it & it keeps us off any wet grass!
- Chef & sous-chef dinner date. Have one person plan a meal & pick up the groceries. The other person gets to work as the sous-chef. Obviously, this date idea may be easiest after baby has gone to bed. We love to play a Spotify list that matches the energy of the meal.
- Game & cocktail date. After baby goes to bed, whip out a board game and put phones away. We love Yahtzee, cribbage, and chess. They’re all great 2 person games. Making a fun new drink, pouring a tasty glass of wine, or even making some hot tea also makes this feel fun & fancy.
- Surprise date. Have one person plan an activity or outing without sharing details with the other. Simply find a mutual time to block off for surprise date time and then unveil as the date goes on. It can be for a meal, music in the park, a walk with coffee, a drive & hike to a beautiful new spot, or really whatever! Regardless of what it is, it’s really just nice to feel thought of and special. The surprise element makes these dates feel intentional and a little different than the normal day to day. These are especially fun in non-COVID times when you can really be out and about.
What other cheap, COVID friendly dates work for you? I’d love to hear!
